Shorebirding by Boat Seahorse Key, and the Surrounding IslandsSeahorse Key, which is a part of the Lower Suwannee National Wildlife Refuge, lies approximately three miles offshore from the mainland of cedar key. At 52 feet above sea level, it is one of the highest points of land on the entire Gulf Coast. The island consists of a pre-Civil War lighthouse, long stretches of sandy beach and a small research facility operated by the University of Florida. The island is one of the largest rookeries in the State of Florida. It is also one of the northern most gathering sites for a large number of the Magnificent Frigate bird. Although these birds migrate south during the winter months a significant number of them usually remain through late October. This is a rare opportunity to view the male birds as they proudly display their brilliant red throat pouch. Also expect to see gulls, terns, pelicans, egrets, herons, ospreys, eagles and dolphins.Birding trips to Seahorse Key will leave from Cedar Key Marina. |
